Crypto-ransomware targeting MacOS is proliferating through pirated software: Recently, K7 Lab malware researcher Dinesh Devadoss first discovered a new ransomware EvilQuest. According to the investigation by Dinesh Devadoss, the ransomware has been active-ethexc since June 2020, mainly attached to pirated macOS software distributed on torrent websites and warez forums. In every documented attack, EvilQuest has asked victims to pay a ransom via the same static Bitcoin address. The first sign of an attack deployed by EvilQuest was a freeze of the MacOS Finder. Once the encryption of system files is completed, a text file with ransom instructions is generated. The average ransom demanded by attackers for unlocking is around $50 worth of Bitcoin, and usually gives victims a 72-hour deadline. Brett Callow, a threat analyst and ransomware expert at malware lab Emsisoft, said EvilQuest is a bigger threat to MacOS users.
